International summer photography workshop «Photography in a magazine» location in St. Petersburg, June 30 – July 8, 2007.

International summer photography workshop «Photography in a magazine» - is an intensive seminar, uniting education under the guidance of experienced specialists in photography, art journalism and editorial work from St. Petersburg, Moscow and Paris, as well as total immersion in a real-life practice of magazine editorial working on a full-fledged 100-page magazine issue.

Photo workshop has international status and is conducted in partnership with the Department of Photography of University Paris-8 – one its kind in Europe, operating for over 25 years, the main purpose of which is the education of authors-photographers not restricted to university curriculum bounds, but connected to the newest trends in the modern art.

The purpose of the International summer photo workshop «Photography in a magazine» is the intensive practical education in photography and art journalism, and the result would be an issue of Russian-French magazine of photography and with photography – visually charged, bright, new, sharp. Another important result of the educational program would be a joint exhibit of works of students and instructors of the project, gathering the works created in the process of education and independent photo shots on editorial assignments, and the works of each student have a chance to be selected for new photo magazine pages.

The team organizing a photo workshop «Photography in a magazine», started the tradition of summer photo schools in Russia; all summer project which took place in St. Petersburg has been directed photographer and curator Olga Korsunova, and for the third year in a row the team is conducting detailed intensive school of photo education.

The program of the International summer photo workshop also includes public events – lectures, master classes, meetings with photographers and photo editors, curators and art critics, discussions and Portfolio reviews. But the main practical part of knowledge, obtained from participation in similar intensive programs would be, of course, concentrated team work and interaction of magazine departments, in the process of creating the issue.

Photography workshop is open to:

- photographers with level of technical skill indicated by instructors,
- students of art colleges, universities, photography schools, courses
- editors and photo editors of magazines and photographers willing to try their hands at photo editor work, «reherse» a possible new work,
- designers, art directors, artists whose interests are in the field of magazine work,
- students of practicing journalists, art critics, curators, art personalities and art managers, who need interesting and real work in mass media and practice of writing articles, and their review, the practice of creating a magazine.

Groups and instructors:

The photo workshop «Photography in a magazine» includes intensive practical courses taught by the leading Russian and foreign photographers, representing three directions in photography – art photography, fashion photography and photo journalism, as well as courses for specialists in the area of journal and magazine production – photo editors’ and art directors’ courses, and practice filed for photo critics and art journalists.

During 9 days the photo workshop participants will go through intense education program, each in his or her own chosen area, the study day would start in the morning and end in the evening with evening open events, meetings with specialists and editorial discussions of the process of creation of a magazine.

An important event in the educational process of intensive schools attended by young photographers from various places in the country and abroad, is the Portfolio review – review of works by young authors by professionals in the field of photography. These meetings and work reviews allow the beginning photographer to get an opinion on his or her works, establish professional contacts, network, further develop their photographic or journalistic careers.

Photography workshop is open to all applicants, upon completion of «entry» tasks, filling out of application and sending photographs for preliminary review.

Applicants are accepted to program based on the results of portfolio review – for photographers, and written essays – for photo critics. The final enrollment is done after the approval of applicant’s works and payment of the deposit. The deposit amount is 2000 rubles.

ATTENTION! In each photography study group, the organizers of the photo workshop reserve 1 tuition-free place! The selection of the best applicant is competitive from among the applicants who have been accepted and paid the deposit. The applicant selected by organizers and instructors for tuition-free education in the photo workshop, will get his or her deposit refunded.
